ISLAMABAD: A man has been fined Rs 10 lakh for sending indecent messages through WhatsApp, the President’s Office has confirmed the federal ombudsman’s verdict against him.
Hassan Ali Khan Laghari was found guilty of harassment under the Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act when he sent inappropriate messages to the complainant Syeda Gulbadan Shahid.
Laghari initially denied all allegations but was found guilty under FOSPA, Pakistan’s Federal Ombudsman for Protection of Harassment.
Following the ombudsman’s decision, Laghari appealed to the Office of the President in an attempt to overturn the decision.
However, his appeal was dismissed, and the preliminary injunction and fine remain in place.
This endorsement of the ombudsman’s decision by the Office of the President underlines Pakistan’s commitment to enforcing laws against online harassment, an important precedent in the legal response to digital harassment.
A spokeswoman for the federal ombudsman noted that Laghari’s messages violated workplace protection laws, which are intended to protect women from harassment.
The case, which has now been confirmed in the highest office, is seen as a reinforcement of the country’s stance against harassment in physical and digital workplaces.
