“Bilawal is just like my child. “This is just politics,” claims the former finance czar.
The senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) dismissed on Sunday the “debate challenge” to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif made by Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Bilawal Bhutto-Zaradri.
“This is not a topic up for debate. “There’s no comparison [between Nawaz and Bilawal],” Dar declared, calling the leader of the PPP a “child” and the leader of the PML-N a statesman.
The politician’s comments coincide with the intensifying rhetorical sparring between the erstwhile friends in recent weeks as they both want to gain electoral traction in Punjab, particularly Lahore, which has emerged as the polling station for the impending elections.
Leading the party’s electoral campaign, Bilawal has often criticized Nawaz for engaging in “politics of revenge” and even challenged him to a debate before the polls on February 8.
“I would like to have a debate with Nawaz Sharif, the PML-N candidate, whenever and whenever we can. Candidates for president and prime minister engage in televised debates to give voters vital details about their platforms. In a social media post, Bilawal stated, “This transparency is essential for an informed electorate ahead of the voting process.”
Shehbaz Sharif, the president of the PML-N, rejected the challenge, arguing that Nawaz ought to have been invited to Sindh, where the party led by Bilawal has ruled since 2008.
In response, Bilawal extended an invitation to the leader of the PML-N to come to Karachi and observe the progress his party has made in Tehsil Gambat and Tharparkar in the Khairpur District.
Upon being questioned over the former foreign minister’s statements that his party would appoint anyone other than Dar as finance minister should they win an election, the PML-N senator replied, “I would like to refrain from reacting to his comments.”

“Bilawal is similar to my child. The PML-N leader stated, “I don’t want to comment [on what he said],” and that he shouldn’t lower himself to Bilawal’s level.
“This is the same Bilawal who on the floor [of the parliament] a few months back used to say that for him I’m Dar uncle,” he said.
Dar mentioned that before he went to his room, his mother, Benazir Bhutto, used to ask him to meet me. The senator from the PML-N added, “This is nothing but politics,” bemoaning the lowly state of the political parties.
The former finance minister poked fun at the PPP chairman by claiming that Bilawal had been quoted as applauding Nawaz and expressing a desire to work under his capable direction.

His words pertain to the administration of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawawa (PML-N), of which the PPP was a major coalition partner. The PDM-led government took power following a motion of no confidence that overthrew the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government.
As both parties attempt to win over supporters before the general elections, the PPP and PML-N’s ongoing verbal sparring is probably going to get more intense in the days to come.
