Opposition Demands Withdrawal of KP Emergency Measures as PHC Sets October 20 Hearing

PESHAWAR: Opposition parties in Pakistan on Thursday demanded the immediate withdrawal of the federal government’s emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), describing the move as unconstitutional and an attack on provincial autonomy.

The opposition’s demand comes amid a legal challenge to the measures, including the imposition of governor’s rule in the province. The Peshawar High Court (PHC) is scheduled to hear a petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) against the emergency measures on October 20.

The upcoming hearing is expected to bring the dispute before the court as questions surrounding the legality of the federal government’s actions remain central to the opposition’s objections. The opposition has called for the measures to be withdrawn immediately, arguing that they undermine the province’s autonomy.

An aide to the prime minister, however, said the measures would be lifted once PTI fulfils its constitutional duties. The statement indicates that the federal government’s position is linked to the party’s compliance with its constitutional responsibilities.

The dispute has added to political tensions surrounding governance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with the opposition seeking an immediate reversal and the government maintaining its stated position. The court hearing on October 20 will provide an opportunity for PTI to present its challenge against the measures.

Separately, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said the province was entering the age of artificial intelligence, with new technologies being adopted to improve governance and public services.

Her remarks highlighted the Punjab government’s focus on using emerging technologies in public administration. The stated objective is to improve the delivery of government services through the adoption of new technological tools.

The developments reflect two different policy issues facing provincial governments: the constitutional dispute over federal intervention in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab’s efforts to incorporate artificial intelligence into governance.

Further details about the proposed technology initiatives in Punjab were not provided in the available information.
