Peshawar School Roof Collapse Kills 33, Injures Dozens During Morning Classes

PESHAWAR: At least 33 people, including 32 children and a female teacher, were killed when the roof of Al-Khair School in Peshawar collapsed during morning classes on October 15, 2026. Dozens of students were injured in the incident, with several reported to be in critical condition.

The collapse occurred after heavy rainfall overnight, with the school’s weak and ageing structure identified as contributing factors. The incident raised concerns about the structural safety of educational institutions and the risks posed by deteriorating school buildings.

Rescue teams launched an operation following the collapse to search for students and staff who might have been trapped beneath the debris. The rescue operation has since been completed, and authorities confirmed that no one remains trapped at the site.

Police arrested the school owner on charges of negligence in connection with the incident. The arrest marks a step in the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse and the possible responsibility of those overseeing the school’s maintenance and safety.

Authorities have also ordered a review of other private school buildings following the tragedy. The review is intended to examine building conditions and address potential safety concerns at educational institutions.

The incident has highlighted the importance of maintaining school infrastructure, particularly in areas affected by heavy rainfall. Ageing structures and inadequate building conditions can pose serious risks to students and staff, especially when buildings are exposed to adverse weather.

With the rescue operation concluded, attention is now turning to the investigation, accountability and the condition of other school buildings. The review ordered by authorities is expected to help identify potential risks and determine whether further action is required to improve safety at private schools.
