RAWALPINDI: In expressing gratitude to the country for the smoothly held general elections in 2024, Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir stated that the country needed “stable hands and a healing touch” to move past the politics of division and chaos, which are unsuitable for a progressive nation of 250 million people.
He was reported by the military’s media wing as saying, “Free and unhindered participation by Pakistani people to exercise their right of vote demonstrated their commitment to democracy and the rule of law as enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan.”
The head of the armed forces also congratulated all of the victorious candidates, political parties, the Election Commission of Pakistan, and the interim administration on the well run general elections of 2024. On February 8, tens of millions of people cast ballots to choose a new administration amidst violent incidents and rising prices.
The leadership and staff of law enforcement organizations deserve “our highest appreciation for creating a safe and secure environment for the electoral process, despite overwhelming odds,” according to a statement from the Inter-Service Public Relations.
He praised the role that the court, civil society, civil administration, and the national media performed in organizing the “largest” election in the country’s history.
“A unified government of all democratic forces imbued with a sense of national purpose will well-represent Pakistan’s diverse polity and pluralism.” The army chief stated that democracy and elections are tools, not ends in and of themselves, for the benefit of the Pakistani people.

In order to move past the politics of chaos and polarization, which do not fit a progressive society of 250 million people, he continued, the country needs “stable hands and a healing touch.”
He said that elections were an exercise in ascertaining the will of the people rather than a zero-sum game of winning and losing. He also said that political leaders and their staff members ought to put aside their personal interests and coordinate their efforts to govern and serve the people, as this may be the only way to ensure that democracy is both functional and meaningful.

He stated that since Pakistanis placed their faith in the Constitution, all political parties had a duty to do the same with political maturity and cohesion. He wished for elections to bring about political and economic stability and serve as a sign of peace and prosperity for the nation. “As we move forward from this national milestone we must reflect on where the country stands today and where our rightful place should be in the comity of nations,” he said.
