PCB Considers PSL Sixes Tournament to Bring Shorter Format to New Cities

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering a new six-a-side cricket tournament tentatively named PSL Sixes, a proposal that could introduce a shorter, entertainment-focused competition during the Pakistan Super League’s off-season.

PSL chief executive Salman Naseer discussed the concept during a podcast, outlining the possibility of a franchise-based tournament designed to offer a different experience from conventional T20 cricket. The proposal remains under consideration, and the PCB has not finalised a launch date, participating teams or venues.

Under the concept being explored, teams would represent cities and regions rather than countries. This would distinguish the proposed competition from international six-a-side events and allow it to build on the established franchise identity associated with the PSL.

The shorter format could provide an alternative for fans seeking fast-paced matches and more concentrated entertainment. Six-a-side cricket generally places a greater emphasis on aggressive batting, quick scoring and compact match schedules, potentially making it suitable for events aimed at attracting new audiences.

Another aspect of the proposal is the possibility of staging matches in smaller stadiums and cities that have not regularly hosted PSL fixtures. If adopted, this approach could bring professional-level franchise cricket to additional communities and give local spectators an opportunity to experience a major cricket event closer to home.

However, these possibilities remain part of a developing concept rather than a confirmed tournament plan. Details concerning the competition’s format, commercial arrangements, player participation and scheduling would need to be established before an official announcement.

Pakistan already has a strong record in six-a-side cricket. The country has won the Hong Kong Sixes six times since 1992 and enters the next edition as defending champion. The upcoming tournament is scheduled for October 31 and November 1.

The PCB’s proposed competition would be separate from that international event, with its own potential franchise structure and domestic focus.

If the board proceeds, PSL Sixes could offer another format through which Pakistan’s established cricket brands reach audiences beyond the traditional league season. For now, supporters will have to wait for further details as officials continue evaluating the idea.
