KARACHI: The mystery fire in the Korangi Creek area that has been a blaze since March 28 with increasing intensity day by day, suddenly estiginushed on its early morning today.
The fire had been burning for the last 17 days uncontrollably while no decisive action was taken by the authorities to control it.
The district administration had sealed off the area, but decisive actions to contain the fire were lacking. However, on Tuesday morning, the fire was suddenly brought under control.
Interestingly, the extinguishing of the fire coincides with reports of a strong gas leakage in a residential area of the city, which began after a fire broke out on March 29 during a routine water boring operation.
Residents nearby have been complaining about the foul smell spreading through the surroundings, and authorities have sealed off the site, restricting access due to safety concerns.
According to officials, the gas is emerging from underground, and its pressure remains steady. The exact source of the gas leak is yet to be confirmed.
This incident is not isolated, as Karachi has experienced similar underground gas leaks in the past, often attributed to poor infrastructure and unmonitored bore activity. Emergency teams are currently monitoring the situation, and efforts are underway to mitigate the issue.
