KARACHI: The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) has decided to award extra marks to Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medical, and General Science Part I students in their exams, up to a maximum of 15%, as per the instruction of Sindh Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar.
The caretaker chief minister for Sindh claimed that this supported the conclusions of the fact-finding committee, which was established to look into why Intermediate Part I students this year had remarkably low grades.
After the committee presented its findings to the chief minister, BIEK, who was in charge of the IT department, was given the order to resign from his position.
According to the CM, the committee’s recommendation to provide 15% additional credit to pre-engineering, pre-medical, and general science students was adopted. The committee was directed to create a marking scheme and patterns for papers before the start of the school year. It said that the three-year implementation of the paper pattern and grading scheme would take place.
The chief minister of Sindh issued an order to expand the number of document inspection centers in the city to ten. In order to ensure there are no errors, he said, the multiple-choice questions (MCQs) should be examined using an optical mark recognition system.

Along with directing that all staff members, including head examiners, examiners, and invigilators, receive training, CM Baqar also stipulated that the BIEK’s rules and regulations must be closely adhered to. “The controller of examinations, all deputy controllers and the IT manager are responsible for conducting the examinations in 2023,” he stated.
Additionally, he stated that board officers who disobey norms and regulations should be served with notice.
The BIEK published the Part-I (first year) test results on January 23. The results showed a worrying drop in the students’ performance.
According to the statistics, 80% of candidates were unsuccessful in the regular arts group, 72% in the private arts group, and 63% in the private commerce group.
Only 36.51% of applicants in the Pre-Medical, 34.79% in the Pre-Engineering, and 38.69% in the Computer Science categories were successful, according to the earlier findings.

Since that admissions to professional universities and colleges are normally determined by Inter Part-I marks, the majority of students who passed their matriculation examinations with lower marks may have had difficulty getting into these institutions.
