LONDON: The caretaker government has issued visas to 37 British journalists, including prominent names such as Christina Lamb from The Times, to cover the upcoming general elections.

The decision comes as part of broader efforts to facilitate international observers and media coverage for the February 8 elections, demonstrating the government’s dedication to ensuring free and fair electoral proceedings in accordance with constitutional mandates.

Following previous instances of denial and deportation, the Pakistan High Commission in London has extended visas to journalists who were previously restricted from entering the country. Teams from renowned media outlets including CNN, Sky, BBC, and ITV are also set to contribute to the comprehensive coverage of the electoral process.

Notably, the visa issuance reflects a collaborative effort between the caretaker government, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), and international stakeholders to uphold democratic values and promote transparency in the electoral process.

According to Ambreen Jan, the Press Information Department executive director general for the External Publicity Wing, a total of 81 foreign journalists from 14 countries have applied for visas to cover the elections. Out of these, 49 visas have already been issued, with the remaining applications under process. Additionally, there are 55 applications for International Election Observers, further emphasizing the global interest and participation in Pakistan’s democratic journey.
