Election 2024: Imran & SM Qureshi cast their vote in jail

ADIALA JAIL: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and party leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi are among a few prisoners who cast their vote in Adiala jail for the 2024 general election.

Khan and Qureshi were sentenced to 10 years in prison in relation to the cipher case on January 30. They are currently In Adiala jail.

According to sources, out of 65,000 prisoners in jails across Punjab, only 1,500 exercised their right to vote.

Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Prisons Mian Farooq Nazir said that out of 43 prisons across the country’s largest province, a mere 2.3 per cent of prisoners submitted papers to cast vote.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had previously issued a notice to the IG regarding rights of prisoners to cast vote in the prisons. Only 1,500 prisoners managed to submit relevant documents to be able to cast votes, sources said.

According to IG prisons, the superintendents oversaw the voting process with help of camera surveillance to ensure transparency and prevent rigging. The superintendents then forwarded the postal ballot papers to the ECP.
