Lahore: The Punjab government has taken a significant step towards improving road safety by introducing an annual fee structure for obtaining driving licenses, effective from January 1, 2024. This transformative change replaces the previous five-year fee system with an annual payment requirement, aiming to foster safer driving practices and stricter adherence to traffic regulations.

The decision was spurred by a tragic accident caused by an unlicensed young driver, resulting in six fatalities. To address the issue of unlicensed driving and enhance road safety, the Lahore City Traffic Police has intensified crackdowns on offenders across Punjab.

Under the new fee structure, applicants for driving licenses will now be required to pay fees on an annual basis, streamlining the licensing process and encouraging more individuals to obtain licenses. The revised fee schedule for various categories of licenses includes:

• Learner: PKR 500
• Bike: PKR 500
• Car/Jeep: PKR 1800
• Motorcycle Rickshaw: PKR 500
• Light Transport (LTV): PKR 2000
• Heavy Transport (HTV): PKR 2000
• Tractor: PKR 1000
• Commercial Tractor: PKR 1500
• Public Service Vehicle: PKR 1500
• Disable Persons: Free of charge
• Other Categories: PKR 1000

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address road safety concerns and ensure compliance with licensing regulations among drivers in Punjab. The implementation of increased annual fees aims to discourage unlicensed driving and contribute to a more regulated and secure traffic environment in the region.
