Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has taken a step by allocating seats for women and minorities in the National and Provincial Assemblies following the rejection of a request from the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) for special seats.
The ECP firmly turned down SIC’s plea for special seats earmarked for women and minorities. In response, the commission issued notifications detailing the allocation of specific seats across the country.
In the National Assembly, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) secured four seats for women, while the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) each received two seats. Additionally, minority representation in the National Assembly was allocated with one seat each to PML-N, PTI, and PPP.
Moving to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam was granted eight seats for women, while PML-N and PPP obtained five seats each. Similarly, minority representation in this assembly was distributed among PTI, PML-N, and PPP, with each party receiving one seat.
In the Punjab Assembly, PPP secured two women seats, while PML-N was granted one seat. Meanwhile, in the Sindh Assembly, PPP and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) were allotted one women seat each.

The ECP’s decision to allocate these seats comes in the wake of the rejection of SIC’s request for special seats for women and minorities, underscoring the commission’s commitment to fair representation in the legislative bodies.
