KARACHI: The Government of Sindh has upgraded primary schools to elementary schools across the province, here on Saturday.
According to the details, government primary schools in Sindh have been given the status of elementary schools. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Sindh Education Minister.
This initiative has come after reviewing the performance of the Sindh Education Foundation. In the meeting, it was decided to make the status of government primary schools equal to that of elementary schools, which is in progress.
The education minister announced a phased approach to upgrading primary schools to reduce dropout rates. Moreover, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto has entrusted the minister with a special mission to minimize the number of school dropouts.
During the meeting, Education Minister Sardar Shah announced that the next academic year will be dedicated to emphasizing the importance of science education. He highlighted that currently, 874,000 students are enrolled in 2,566 schools under the Sindh Education Foundation.
Earlier this year, the Sindh High Court (SHC) gave the education department two months to reopen government schools that had been closed due to insufficient resources.

Following a detailed report by Sindh High Court Justice Salahuddin, which highlighted the dire state of government schools in Sindh, the court ordered the reopening of these schools.
The report, based on a survey of 19 districts, identified 2,640 closed schools and 438 non-functional government schools in Sanghar district alone.
