Sartaj Aziz, a veteran economist and politician who served as both Pakistan’s finance minister and foreign minister, died on Tuesday at the age of 95.
In a tweet, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ahsan Iqbal expressed his condolences and praised Aziz’s contributions to the country.

Aziz was born in 1929 in Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He was a Pakistan Movement activist and a planning commission civil servant. He later became a member of the Food and Agriculture Organization as well as the International Fund for Agricultural Development.

He entered politics in 1984 and served as the former prime minister Muhammad Khan Junejo’s minister of state for agriculture and food security. Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif appointed him as Finance Minister in 1990, 1993, and 1997. He was also foreign minister in 1998 and 2013, and national security advisor in 2013.
He received the Tamgha-e-Pakistan for his national service.
