According to regional leaders on Monday, Haiti’s prime minister Ariel Henry resigned amid growing chaos. They also stated that the resignation will take effect with the appointment of a transition council and a temporary replacement.
President of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and leader of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, confirmed Henry’s resignation. Henry has been leading the Caribbean nation since the killing of its previous president in 2021. Ali said: “We acknowledge the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry upon the establishment of a transitional presidential council and the naming of an interim prime minister.”
Armed gangs expanded their resources, power, and territory during Henry’s presidency, which is why the 74-year-old neurosurgeon asked Kenya to join a security mission backed by the UN. But things got out of hand, leaving Henry trapped in Puerto Rico, which prompted local officials to demand a smooth transition.
In a televised speech, Henry declared, “The government that I am leading will resign immediately after the installation of (a transition) council.” “I want to thank the Haitian people for the opportunity I had been granted.” “I’m asking all Haitians to remain calm and do everything they can for peace and stability to come back as fast as possible,” he stated.

Videos of celebrants dancing to music in a party atmosphere, shooting fireworks, and celebrating in the street went viral on social media after his resignation. Henry was given permission by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to leave Puerto Rico and go abroad. In addition, he stated that for him to go back home, security in Haiti would need to be improved. According to the official, a decision on the resignation was made on Friday.
