Women in Karachi’s port city expressed concern over the predicted hike in prices for essential beauty items, following the government’s proposal to raise cosmetics taxes in the fiscal year 2024.
Eyeliner, blush, face powder, foundation, mascara, lipstick, and nail polish are all likely to increase in price, raising concerns among consumers who rely on these products for their daily beauty routines.
The proposed budget includes a 5 to 7 percent tax rise on numerous facial and beauty-enhancing items, which will raise customers’ financial burden.
Shopkeepers in the city are likewise concerned, forecasting a drop in sales if prices rise as projected.
They underline that any cost increases resulting from higher taxes will have a direct impact on consumer affordability and purchasing power.
One shopkeeper said, “If the goods become more expensive, sales will naturally decrease.”
There has been a plea for the government to reconsider the tax increase on ornamental items, with some recommending that relief be offered to ensure continuing access to basic beauty products.
