KARACHI: Karachiites finally received a much-needed downpour on Friday afternoon after an extremely hot and humid day resulting in two deaths due to heatstroke.

Heavy to light rain lashed different areas of Karachi including Gulistan-e-Johar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Surjani, North Karachi, New Karachi, Malir, Cantt, Ibrahim Hyderi, Shahrae Faisal, Bahadurabad, University Road, Gulshan-e-Maymar and Gadap and others.

According to the met office, the highest rainfall was recorded at University Road with 14.8 mm, while the lowest was at Ibrahim Hyderi with 1 mm. Furthermore, the Met Office forecasts thunderstorms on Saturday and light rain or drizzle on Sunday.

As per the Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD), Karachi’s maximum temperature reached 39°C with a humidity level of 79%, making the heat index feel like 47°C.

Two days earlier, the mercury in the metropolitan reached a sweltering 40.5°C and the feels-like temperature reached 52°C.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued urban flooding and flash flooding alerts in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Islamabad, KP, and central and northeastern Punjab from July 17 to 21 as Monsoon rains and thundershowers with occasional gaps forecast in these regions.
