LAHORE: A huge pothole appeared on the main road of Lahore’s Johar Town, swallowing three vehicles, a car and two motorcycles and causing severe traffic disruption.
The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has reported that the leakage of an underground sewer line has caused the sinkhole to form, which is gradually weakening the road. The sudden opening of the sinkhole trapped two people in the car and injured them. They were rescued with the help of locals, whose efforts quickly spread the video on social media.
Following the incident, Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) ordered immediate diversion of traffic from the main boulevard, Johar Town, which led to congestion on nearby roads.
This is the fourth sinkhole in Johor Town in recent months. In a previous incident, a car carrying a woman, and her child developed a sinkhole, injuring them.
Recent record-breaking rains in Lahore have exacerbated the problem, damaging the city’s drainage system. Heavy rains in August caused an old sewer line to collapse on Khayaban Ferdowsi, creating another large sinkhole.
Residents and commuters are demanding the authorities to address the recurring infrastructure issues and ensure road safety in the area.
