ISLAMABAD: In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court division bench has called for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including ChatGPT to enhance judicial efficiency, recommending the concerned authorities to develop guidelines in this regard.
Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, in an 18-page judgment, said that AI may streamline judicial functions, reduce delays, and be employed for legal research and drafting judgments.
“But it cannot replicate the moral, ethical, and empathic reasoning that lies at the heart of judging,” the ruling stated.
The ruling further added, “Courts must thus pursue a calibrated integration harnessing AI’s efficiencies without surrendering the conscience, independence, and humanity that justice demands.”
Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, in a judgment, wrote, “We strongly recommend that the National Judicial (Policy Making) Committee in collaboration with the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan considers developing comprehensive guidelines on the permissible uses of AI within the judiciary.”
The judge ordered both the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan and the National Judicial (Policy Making) Committee to prepare guidelines to regulate this emerging intersection of law and AI.
