Türkiye bowled them out in an exciting match, defeating Group D leaders the United States 3-2 on Wednesday, in Los Angeles for FIFA World Cup 2026.
The outcome did not affect the fate of Türkiye in the tournament, but the team had a performance that was one of their best.
The U.S. opened up strong and advanced in the first few minutes with a corner kick from Auston Trusty that found him up close and personal with the goal. The initial objective, though, did nothing to quell Türkiye’s response.
The visitors were soon back in the game after a few minutes when Arda Güler turned in a calm finish to come back into the game. Once again, the young midfielder proved himself as one of the brightest football talents of Türkiye.
Barış Yılmaz came back to the field after the break and scored an impressive well-constructed attack to give Türkiye a much-needed 2-1 halftime lead.
In the second half the Americans came back with renewed vigour and found the net again through the long range strike of Sebastian Berhalter who left the keeper with little hope.
The game was tied until the final moments as both teams looked for a winning score. The match was on the verge of a draw when Kaan Ayhan found the net in the dying moments for a memorable 3-2 win for Türkiye.
The victory was not sufficient to maintain Türkiye’s presence in the World Cup, but the team left the tournament with a spirited performance, providing much encouragement for future international events.
The USUW lost their first game of the group stage, but still came out on top of Group D, and will now look to the knockout stages.
