EU Pakistan expresses despair over claims of serious meddling in 2024 Election process

EU Pakistan has expressed despair over the claims of serious meddling in the 2024 election process, including the arrest of political activists, and has urged the appropriate authorities to guarantee a thorough investigation into any election violations that have been revealed.

In the Statement they have said:

The general elections in Pakistan took place on February 8th, in spite of months of delays and uncertainty, and in the midst of a dangerous security situation. The European Union has taken note of this development. Notwithstanding the structural obstacles that women and members of minority groups still confront, Pakistanis’ utilization of their right to vote shows their dedication to democracy and the rule of law.

The EU is pleased that more women have registered to vote than in the previous elections. We lament the absence of fair competition brought about by certain political actors’ incapacity to run for office, limitations on the right to assemble, the freedom of speech both online and offline, internet access restrictions, and claims of serious electoral meddling, including the arrest of political activists.
