
KARACHI: In a shocking turn of events, a young couple, Abdul Qayum, and his wife Zainab, who were expecting their first baby, died in an accident near the Malir Halt Flyover in Model Colony.
While riding their motorcycle, a speedy water tanker hit them, killing Abdul Qayum on the spot. Zainab fell unconscious from severe injuries; however, she gave birth to a newborn child at the scene, who died instantaneously.
Witnesses described the scene as horrific. Some individuals screamed in response to the trauma they had witnessed, and according to a video clip shown on social media, a bystander ran to go save the newborn, rushing it to the hospital.
The driver of the water tanker was caught by an angry crowd, tortured, and handed over to the police, who also apprehended the tanker’s helper and confiscated the vehicle. The deceased couple, Abdul Qayum and Zainab were residents of Malir Cantt, and Qayum was an employee of the Cantonment Board Malir.
The tragic accident has left many mournful and angry, with instructions for action taken to make actual procedures to prevent horrific incidents involving heavy vehicles.
Casualty statistics suggest that this incident raised the total for traffic fatalities to 214 this year, with heavy vehicles claiming 68 lives in 83 days, 17 from dumpers, 24 trailer fatalities, and 14 as a result of water tankers.
