LAHORE: Poultry prices in Lahore and parts of the country remain at record highs, with chicken now selling for around Rs 750 per kilogram, even though the official rates are set at around Rs 600.
The rising prices after Eid are putting a financial burden on consumers, while weak enforcement of price control regulations is allowing retailers to charge inflated prices.
Despite reports that the official price list of poultry products has not been changed for a week, prices in the market continue to rise. A whole chicken, which is officially priced at Rs 595 per kilogram, is now selling for Rs 750 to Rs 800, while boneless cuts have reached Rs 1,000, far above the fixed rates.
The prices of fruits, vegetables and mutton have also seen a significant increase. Mutton is being sold for over Rs 2,500 per kilogram.
Fruits and vegetables are also being sold at prices higher than their official rates, further adding to the rising cost of living. Despite efforts by local administrations to control prices, the lack of effective enforcement has allowed traders to increase prices without any checks.
