ISLAMABAD: The federal government of Pakistan is moving ahead with a plan to eliminate unnecessary fees. The Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) collects a monthly fee of Rs 35.
A formal proposal has been prepared to eliminate the PTV surcharge, which currently applies to all electricity consumers – domestic, commercial and industrial. The proposal is expected to be presented to the prime minister in a high-level meeting next week.
PTV collects about Rs. 1.5 billion every month from about 42.6 million consumers through this electricity bill fee. The government’s plan seeks to rid consumers of it.
PTV operates under the federal government with nine television channels and over 6,000 employees. Its funding has long relied on public money, including electricity surcharges. The proposed removal of the fee signals a change in how the broadcaster could be financed in the future.
Officials said the government is ready to eliminate outdated or unfair charges currently levied on consumers in electricity bills.
