The climber was the part of a small international team which was trying to climb the 7,282 meter K-6 mountain in the beautiful Hushe Valley, one of the most popular and breathtaking sites for high mountain climbing in Pakistan.

Initial reports indicate that the team encountered the avalanche at approximately 5,000 meters as they were going up the mountain. The French climber was died on the spot, with the other two team members escaping the incident without hurt.

The local authorities and the rescue volunteers, after receiving information via satellite, began a search and rescue mission in the remote mountainous region, in order to locate and recover the fallen climber’s body.

Despite all the dangers, Gilgit-Baltistan is still one of the best places in the world to go for an adventure holiday, with hundreds of international climbers visiting each year. The area boasts some of the highest mountains in the world, such as the K2, the Nanga Parbat, Broad Peak and Gasherbrum peaks.

But the region of the mountains in northern Pakistan is risky to climb as the weather is volatile, avalanches, falling stones, and difficult terrain are all dangers, experts say. It is recommended that climbers go on guided tours and with suitable equipment.

Generally, the climbing season in Gilgit-Baltistan starts in June and ends with mid-August when conditions are most favorable for high altitude expeditions.

Police conveyed their grief at the unfortunate occurrence, and reiterated their pledge to help rescue efforts in the event and secure the safety of mountaineering in the region.
