Sindh to Launch Pink Taxi Scheme as More Women Take the Wheel

KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced plans to introduce a Pink Taxi Scheme for women as part of its efforts to improve safe transport and expand economic opportunities for female commuters and drivers across the province.

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the upcoming Electric Vehicle (EV) Taxi Scheme will include a fleet of dedicated pink taxis exclusively for women. He added that the provincial government will release complete details of the project in the coming weeks.

The announcement comes as the government reports a sharp rise in the number of women obtaining driving licences under its Pink Scooty Scheme.

According to the minister, only around 150 women held valid driving licences when the programme was launched. That number has now grown significantly, with more than 25,000 women applying for licences, reflecting growing interest in independent mobility across Sindh.

Authorities have also directed traffic officials to take action against cases where scooters issued under the Pink Scooty Scheme are being used by male family members instead of the registered female beneficiaries.

Officials say the new Pink Taxi Scheme is expected to create employment opportunities for women while offering safer and more comfortable transport services for female passengers.

The provincial government believes the initiative will build on Sindh’s wider investment in electric public transport. After introducing electric buses, officials describe the EV taxi programme as another step towards modernising urban transport while encouraging greater participation of women in the workforce.

The government is expected to announce eligibility criteria, registration procedures and the launch timeline after the project receives final approval.
