Islamabad: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) have formed an alliance for the upcoming Senate by-elections.
They’ve agreed that PPP will support JUI candidates in Balochistan, while JUI will back Yousaf Raza Gillani, a PPP candidate. Both parties have clarified that their collaboration is solely for parliamentary purposes and not for forming a government. The Senate by-election is scheduled for March 14, with vacant seats in Balochistan being a focal point where JUI seeks PPP’s support.
Gillani expressed his appreciation for the alliance, emphasizing their mutual support for parliamentary proceedings. Notably, Gillani and Ilyas Meharban from Sunni Ittehad Council will contest for a vacant Senate seat from Islamabad. The by-election will take place for six seats across Islamabad, Sindh, and Balochistan, with polling scheduled from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

These vacant seats resulted from senators transitioning to other legislative bodies, necessitating by-elections to fill the vacancies. Previously, PPP nominated Gillani for the Senate chairman position, prompting him to resign from his National Assembly seat in Multan.
