CALIFORNIA: WhatsApp has announced a major privacy update that will allow users to connect with others without revealing their phone numbers. The messaging platform is introducing usernames, giving people a new way to chat while keeping their personal numbers private.
According to the company, users will soon be able to reserve a unique username that can be shared instead of a mobile number. The feature will be available gradually towards the end of this year.
The update aims to enhance privacy, particularly when communicating with individuals for the first time, joining communities, or engaging with businesses and creators. Unlike the display of a phone number, a selected username will be displayed when the feature is available.
To help users secure their preferred name, WhatsApp has already started allowing early username reservations. If a desired username is unavailable, the app will suggest alternatives through a built-in username generator.
The company also plans to let creators, businesses and organizations claim usernames that match their existing Facebook or Instagram accounts, making it easier to maintain a consistent online identity across Meta platforms.
WhatsApp said the new system has been designed with privacy in mind. There will be no public username directory, and people will need to know a user’s exact username before starting a conversation. An optional username key will provide an additional layer of protection by giving users greater control over who can contact them.
Once the feature becomes available in a user’s region, setting a username will be simple. Users can open Settings, tap Account, select Username, and choose an available name.
The company says usernames will be introduced in phases over the coming months, with notifications sent to users as the feature becomes available in their country.
