Democrats Capture Both US Congress Chambers in Major Midterm Election Victory

Democrats have won control of both chambers of the United States Congress in the midterm elections held on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, according to results reported on 4 November 2026, based on the Associated Press (AP) tally reported by Al Jazeera and Reuters. The result marks the first time in 20 years that a Republican president has lost control of both houses, the last such occasion being under President George W. Bush in 2006.

In the House of Representatives, Democrats had won 228 seats so far, according to the AP, and were leading in 34 more. That means the final total could exceed 260, which would be the party’s biggest House strength since 1990, when it won 267 seats. Twenty-five House seats flipped from Republicans to Democrats.

In the Senate, Democrats won 54 seats and were leading in another. At least six to seven Republican Senate seats flipped to the Democrats, including seats in Texas, Kansas and South Carolina. The scale of the Senate result was a central part of the Democrats’ overall success.

Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York is likely to become speaker of the House. If confirmed, he would be the first Black speaker in American history. The new 120th Congress is due to be sworn in on 3 January 2027.

Some races were still being counted when the results were reported, so final totals may change slightly as counting continues. Even so, the overall picture was clear: voters had handed control of both chambers to the Democrats, reshaping the political balance in Washington for the remainder of the presidential term.
