Pakistan Reopens Gabd-Rimdan Border Crossing with Iran After Week-Long Suspension

Pakistan reopened its border crossing with Iran at Gabd-Rimdan on Saturday morning, October 25, restoring bilateral trade and allowing stranded trucks carrying LPG and essential food commodities to resume movement after a week-long suspension.

The suspension had begun on October 17, when Pakistan’s Commerce Ministry suspended trade at Gabd-Rimdan and Taftan without specifying a reason, although the move was believed to be linked to security concerns.

Border officials cleared commercial consignments holding a consignment note dated October 16 or earlier at the Gabd-Rimdan point, known as Gate 250, in Gwadar district.

Mir Naveed Jan Kalmati, president of the Gwadar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, confirmed that trade operations resumed on Saturday morning. He said the restored supply chain is expected to ease a nationwide LPG shortage and reduce soaring energy and food prices.

The reopening comes after a difficult week for traders and transporters. On Thursday, unidentified gunmen targeted the backlog of freight vehicles parked near the closed crossing, setting dozens of trucks ablaze.

The incident added to the losses faced by businesses whose goods had been stuck at the border since the suspension began.

Gabd-Rimdan is an important trade route between Pakistan and Iran, particularly for the movement of LPG and food supplies into Pakistan. Its closure had disrupted supplies and contributed to shortages and price pressures.

The resumption of trade is therefore expected to bring relief to consumers and businesses, especially in areas that depend on supplies transported through the crossing.

Traders hope the reopening will allow the backlog to be cleared quickly and normal commercial activity to resume. Officials and business leaders will be watching whether the restored route can stabilise supplies in the coming days.

The reopening marks a return to normal trade operations at Gabd-Rimdan after a week of disruption, uncertainty and damage to parked freight vehicles.
