Pakistan pulled off one of the most dramatic wins in their recent history at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday, October 25, defeating England by one wicket to secure a place in the tri-series final.
The hosts appeared to be heading for defeat after collapsing to 154-9 in the 34th over while chasing a target of 242. But Shadab Khan, batting at No. 8, produced a stunning unbeaten century to turn the match around.
Shadab scored an unbeaten 113 off 96 balls, including 13 fours and 5 sixes, in what was his maiden century. His innings was not just the highest individual ODI score by a batter at No. 8 or lower, but also the key to one of the great ODI chases.
He was supported by Haris Rauf, who finished 7 not out off 19 balls. The pair shared an unbeaten 89-run last-wicket stand, the highest 10th-wicket stand in a successful ODI chase.
Pakistan finished at 243-9 in 47.1 overs, with 17 balls to spare. Rauf hit the winning boundary to complete the extraordinary comeback.
Earlier, England had been bowled out for 241. Ben Duckett scored 105 for England, while Shaheen Shah Afridi took 4-46 and debutant Razaullah claimed 2-38.
Pakistan’s chase had started badly. Fakhar Zaman made 10, Saim Ayub scored 6 and Babar Azam was dismissed for 10. Saad Baig made a quick 32 off 22 balls, but wickets kept falling and Pakistan were left at 154-9 with seemingly no way back.
Shadab, however, refused to give up. He played with a mix of patience and aggression, rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries. As the target came closer, his confidence grew, and he found the boundary with increasing regularity.
England’s bowlers tried to apply pressure, with Jamie Overton taking 3-43, but Shadab’s calm approach and powerful hitting proved too much.
The victory sends Pakistan into the tri-series final and will be remembered as one of the finest individual performances in Pakistan’s ODI history.
