5.9 Magnitude Earthquake Felt in Lahore, Islamabad and Other Cities Across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: A 5.9-magnitude earthquake was felt across several parts of Pakistan on Saturday morning, sending residents rushing out of homes, offices and shopping centres as strong tremors spread across a wide area.

The earthquake was experienced in Lahore, Islamabad, Chakwal, Charsadda, Mianwali, Swat, Karak and Shangla, causing panic among the public. However, authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.

According to seismic monitoring officials, the earthquake struck at around 6:35 a.m., with its epicentre located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan at a depth of approximately 178 kilometres. Experts said the considerable depth allowed the tremors to travel across northern and central Pakistan.

Emergency response teams are monitoring the situation and have advised citizens to remain calm while staying alert for possible aftershocks.

The tremors have been reported in Balochistan in recent days and the latest quake followed a series of tremors. The province is still under surveillance, officials say as geologic activity continues.
Seismologists said that earthquakes were a frequent natural phenomenon in Pakistan as it was close to the active tectonic plate boundaries. Scientists are able to identify high-risk areas, but can’t predict the precise strength or timing of future earthquakes.
Rumours of the disaster to be spread on social media have been discouraged and it has been suggested that only official information should be trusted. The people have also been warned to observe the measures to be taken during an earthquake and to go to open spaces if they experience another strong tremor.
