Pakistan’s Monsoon Season Likely to Begin from July 1, Says PMD

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is expected to receive the first spell of the 2026 monsoon season from July 1, with rain forecast for parts of Punjab, Azad Kashmir and the country’s northern regions, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

PMD officials said monsoon currents are likely to enter the country through northeastern Punjab and Kashmir, bringing widespread rainfall to several northern areas during the opening phase of the season.

Weather officials, however, said Sindh is unlikely to receive significant rainfall during the first week of July. Current forecasts indicate that most parts of the province may remain dry until at least July 5.

For Karachi, meteorologists are closely monitoring a low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal. If the system strengthens and follows a favourable path, it could trigger rain in the city and nearby districts.

Despite that possibility, the PMD expects below-average monsoon rainfall in Sindh this year compared with normal seasonal levels.

The department has advised citizens, particularly those living in northern and hilly areas, to stay updated with official weather forecasts as rainfall may lead to localized flooding, landslides and traffic disruptions in vulnerable regions.

Meanwhile, weather officials noted that neighbouring India also recorded significantly lower rainfall during June, with precipitation remaining well below the seasonal average.

The PMD is expected to issue further weather advisories as the monsoon system moves closer to Pakistan.
