Pakistan Has No Fertiliser Shortage, Government Assures Farmers

The federal government has denied there would be a fertiliser shortage as it assured farmers adequate urea supplies were available throughout the country for the coming crop season.

During the meeting, the Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain assured the Minister of Agriculture, Punjab Syed Muhammad Ashiq Hussain Shah that the government is committed to ensuring sufficient availability of fertilisers at reasonable prices.

The meeting was aimed at facilitating uninterrupted supply of farmers’ fertilisers at affordable prices, and stability in the market supply during the farming season.

Following the meeting, Rana Tanveer Hussain said fertiliser manufacturing units are functioning normally and there is enough buffer stock to cater the country’s requirement. He emphasized that there is no imminent shortage and asked farmers not to listen to rumours in the market.

The minister stated the federal and provincial governments are closely cooperating with companies producing fertiliser to keep prices stable and to help in the supply chain. He also said that talks are also on with manufacturers to consider lowering the price of urea to give farmers some relief.

Co-ordination between the federal government and the provinces and the fertiliser industry will be maintained to ensure timely delivery of fertilisers in agricultural areas, officials said.

The government is confident that sufficient supplies of safe and affordable fertilizers will boost farmers’ confidence in crop production, enhance agriculture productivity and boost the country’s agricultural economy in the coming season.
