Pakistan’s electronic media regulator has renewed restrictions on live television coverage of terrorist attacks and security incidents, prompting criticism from press freedom advocates who warn that the move could limit independent reporting during emergencies.
On October 13, 2026, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) issued a directive to all satellite television channels, reiterating restrictions originally introduced in February 2023.
The directive prohibits live broadcasts of terrorist attacks, explosions and firing incidents. PEMRA warned that broadcasters violating the instructions could face legal action under Sections 29A, 30 and 33 of the PEMRA Ordinance, 2002.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the renewed restrictions and called on Pakistani authorities to withdraw what it described as sweeping limitations on live television coverage of security incidents.
