Islamabad could become the venue for the next round of technical talks between the United States and Iran later this month, in a move that would further highlight Pakistan’s growing diplomatic role in the region.
According to reports, the proposed meeting is expected to take place on July 14 and 15, although the schedule has yet to be officially confirmed. If it goes ahead, technical experts from both countries will meet in Islamabad to continue discussions that began earlier this year.
The previous rounds of negotiations were held in Switzerland and Qatar, where officials focused on technical issues aimed at keeping dialogue between Washington and Tehran moving forward.
Pakistan is expected to facilitate the discussions rather than take part in the negotiations themselves. Diplomatic observers say Islamabad’s balanced ties with both Iran and several Gulf countries have helped position it as a suitable host for sensitive regional dialogue.
Before the proposed talks, an Iranian delegation led by Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni is expected to visit Pakistan after the funeral ceremonies of Iran’s late Supreme Leader. The delegation is likely to include senior officials from several ministries, including trade, industry, agriculture, transport and foreign affairs.
Officials believe the visit will also provide an opportunity to review bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, regional connectivity and economic relations.
Diplomatic sources say Pakistan has remained engaged with both sides in recent weeks and continues to support efforts that encourage dialogue and regional stability. While no official announcement has been made about the Islamabad meeting, preparations are reportedly moving forward and further details are expected in the coming days.
