UHS Announces New PhD Eligibility Rules, Conference Attendance Now Mandatory

The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has announced new eligibility rules for PhD students, making conference participation a compulsory part of completing a doctoral degree.

Under the updated policy, every PhD scholar must attend at least three national and one international conference or seminar before becoming eligible for the award of a PhD degree. University officials say the step is aimed at improving research quality and giving students greater exposure to the latest academic developments.

The decision was approved during the 227th meeting of the Advanced Studies and Research Board (ASRB), chaired by UHS Vice Chancellor Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore.

During the meeting, the board also approved four new competency-based PhD programmes in Medical Education, Nursing, Oral Biology and Public Health. The university believes these programmes will better prepare researchers to meet modern healthcare challenges.

UHS also gave the green light to an updated Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) curriculum along with a new Certificate in Comprehensive Family Medicine Practice and Emergency Care (CCFP-EC) programme.

According to the university, the new PhD Nursing programme will focus on clinical leadership, research, teaching, healthcare policy and professional ethics. Students will also complete clinical and teaching residency hours, along with practical training in life-saving skills.

The newly approved Public Health PhD programme will cover key areas including disease prevention, health promotion, community-based research, stronger health systems and the use of artificial intelligence in public health.

Meanwhile, the Oral Biology programme has been designed to strengthen research in dental sciences by covering advanced topics such as regenerative dentistry, stem cell research, oral microbiology and forensic dentistry.

University officials say these changes are part of ongoing efforts to modernise postgraduate education and produce highly skilled researchers who can contribute to Pakistan’s healthcare sector.
