To boost transparency and minimize the problems related to land, The Punjab government has introduced Green Property Certificate as one of the important documents required for the property transaction in the province of Punjab.
Green Property Certificate is a certificate issued by Punjab Land Records Authority (PLRA) confirming the legal status and right to ownership of a property. This document establishes that the property is in the official land register, and assists in transactions between buyers and sellers.
There has been a lot of queries recently from property owners on the expiration date of the certificate. PLRA officials said the certificate isn’t set to expire automatically. All of the information provided in the document will remain accurate until there is another transaction, ownership transfer, court case, mortgage, or other such change on the property.
Owners may wish to request an updated certificate when there is a sale, an inheritance, a transfer or any other legal change in the information on the property.
The Green Property Certificate is now an important instrument to safeguard property rights and reduce the chance of fraudulent dealings. It also assists financial institutions and the buyer in confirming the validation of ownership information before making any agreements related to a property.
The certificate will be issued after applicants come to the land record centre, submit information about the land, complete identity verification, and the record is verified and made public. The property is awarded Green Status and the certificate is issued once all the stages are finished and no objections are raised.
PLRA officials stress that the system has been constructed for secure property possession and also to build greater than ever before self-confidence in the real estate market in Punjab.
The authority has also announced that from July 2026 onward, the Green Property Certificate will be mandatory for multiple property transactions in the province, making it a vital document for landowners.
Property experts feel that this will bring transparency, add to the legal security of buyers and sellers, and assist in the modernization of land record system across Punjab.
